How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My trailer and poster work together to create a promotional package, to get my film noticed. The title 'Triquetra' is fresh and orginal, but also significant as we got the name from the symbol on the necklace as it was the main prop within our story line. I have included this symbol on my poster as it relates directly to my trailer and drives the plot. This symbol could become well known and recognisable directly to my film.
The marketing business is expensive but necessary when making and promoting a film. Marketing is competitive, with many different films fighting for one promoting spot. This means that I had to make my trailer both eye catching and informative, leaving the audience feeling intrigued and wanting to pay to see my finished product. My poster had to reach my target audience of older teenagers and young adults, so I created it simple, eye catching but also fitting into the gothic/horror genre. My poster could also be sent out to cinema's, included in magazines and put in with suitable DVD's of the horror genre.
I have put the names of the three main stars within the film at the top of my poster, as stars can be good selling points if they have a following that they can attract to the new release. Word of mouth is also a good way of getting the film noticed, but is not something that can be planned, as it is created by people who have seen the film and thought highly of it, recommending it to friends. This is why it is an effective way of using publicity, but in opposition a bad word of mouth is very difficult for the film to overcome.
The tag line on my poster gets people asking questions, and makes them curious to know more. It is catchy and easily remembered, making it a valuable addition to my poster. The tag line also is a direct connection to my trailer as it links to what is said in the intertitles. The intertitles talk about terrible things happening to people who dont believe, so when the tag line asks "do you believe?" it has more meaning that isnt immediately obvious to anyone who hasnt seen the trailer.
The magazine cover that I have created is an example of publicity for a film product. Publicity is mostly about the actors, presented through interviews on television or in magazines, rather then promotion which is about the characters and the overall plot of the film, presented through advertising and similar methods. Publicity for the majority is out of the distributors hands and therefore is of little or no cost, but is effective as it can attract attention, fame and media attention for the film. However, the distributor would try to generate publicity in magazines, as it would result in more people paying to see the film, resulting in a larger profit.
My magazine has a picture of my main protagonist/monster on the front cover, looking directly at the camera, which links to my poster, as the same star is on that aswell, but in my magazine I wanted the star to be recognisable as the character, but in this case she is the actress rather then the character she is playing. I think my magazine is eye catching and the film strip is really effective in portraying other film stills and catching the attention of passes by when the magazine is on the shelf. The film strip also indicates that the magazine is about films, rather then any other subject and also combined with the title and layout it also gets across the genre of the films advertised and talked about within the magazine.
Overall I think that my magazine cover and poster work well with my trailer to promote my overall finished product. They are eye catching and informative, and increases the chances of getting my film noticed and of making a profit.

  1. This is a good start but really it needs some more detail about the role of the distributor. For example you discuss publicity. How would the distributor try to generate publicity in magazines? You need to demonstrate your knowledge of distribution a little more. Look at the launchingfilms website or the lovely handout! This would also be much better with some visual material or even some links (perhaps to the Film Distributors Association website or similar). Remember that there are marks available for utilising the full potential of the medium of the blog in your evaluation of your work.
